When you come to a point in your career where you have to either take on something new (like starting your own business) or take on a larger role, it's common to feel like "I don't know what the heck I'm doing and someone's gonna find out." ๐Ÿ˜ฑ In #BigLaw, associates are often treated like experts if you've done something once, which can be nerve-wracking when someone expects you to build upon this "skill" you barely figured out the first time and run with a deal. Every time something new and more challenging is thrown my way, I'm tempted to feed into this #impostersyndrome and avoid the work. After all, I haven't mastered that last thing, so how could I possibly do this new thing? I've since learned this is a belief that's been holding me back at work and in my coaching business. We tend to undercut our achievements and abilities and often are the least objective when it comes to assessing our skills. So here are a few questions I ask myself every time this thought of "not being good enough" or "not being ready" creeps in and threatens to stall my growth and opportunities: โ€ข Have you ever done something hard before that you thought you weren't ready to do? How did it turn out? Is there a way to make this new task feel less daunting? After I go through these 3 questions objectively, I am able to remind myself of 1) the things I've had to get through to get to the point I'm at today and 2) my ability to figure out a way forward.
